Successful modernization of the GdP app

We completely modernized the existing police union (GdP) app by redeveloping the frontend and backend, improving user-friendliness and successfully digitizing the patrol assistant. In doing so, we placed particular emphasis on data protection and increasing server security.

Project shortcuts

The police union, GdP for short, represents the professional, societal, economic, ecological, social and cultural interests of police employees and former employees. It represents over 210,000 members and is the largest and most influential trade union in the police sector. For over 70 years, it has campaigned at all political levels to improve the working and living conditions of police employees. The GdP is a member of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). Our task was to modernize the existing app, with the core objective of both increasing user-friendliness and facilitating future maintenance and development work by changing the framework to Flutter. With the modernization, we were able to create a modern and technically robust solution for the GdP and its members. The digitized shift calendar and the patrol assistant form the heart of the application and are also ready for use independently of a permanent Internet connection.

Offline first

The app works independently of a permanent internet connection.

Digitization of the patrol assistant

We integrated a digital version of the established print strip helper to make it easier to use and adapt it to everyday mobile use.

Data protection

User data is only stored locally on the device to ensure maximum security and data protection.

Increasing server security

We modernized the backend server and strengthened its security to meet current standards.

The successful transformation of the patrol assistant

The biggest challenge was the digital implementation of the patrol helper. This module is based on a print medium with highly compressed, subject-specific information. By working closely with the author of the patrol helper, who contributed his expertise in numerous meetings, this domain knowledge was successfully transferred into a digital and user-friendly form.

Work phases and milestones of the project

  • Kickoff (September 2023)

    Definition of the requirements and creation of the backlog.

  • Module development

    Implementation of the main modules:

    • Crime catalog,
    • patrol assistants,
    • shift calendar.
    • Development of the smaller modules after completion of the main modules.

  • Release (July 2024):

    Completion and rollout of the app.

  • Post-Release:

    Continuous adjustments and development of smaller features.

Successful GdP app with award

The collaboration with the GdP was extremely successful. The new app was not only received positively across the board, but also won the German Design Award 2025. The increased user-friendliness and the sophisticated digitalization of the patrol assistant were particularly highlighted.
