SUSTAINABILITY

Think and act for the long term

Our commitment to sustainability and the UN Global Compact

Sustainability is just as important to us as a group of companies as it is to our employees. We are committed to taking responsibility and thinking long term. Instead of planning in quarters, we take concrete operational action to promote sustainable solutions and tackle challenges in a meaningful way. As a digital group, our goal is not only to offer innovative solutions, but also to make a positive contribution to sustainability. An important part of our commitment is our support for the UN Global Compact, a global initiative of the United Nations that promotes human rights, fair working conditions, environmental protection and the fight against corruption. Through this commitment, we promote responsible and ethical business practices that have a positive impact on society and the environment. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a key guideline for us in achieving our goals. These global goals help us to actively address challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change and environmental degradation. Together with our stakeholders, we are continuously working to shape a sustainable future. Here are some of the measures we are taking to actively implement the SDGs.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

Our measures to promote health in the workplace and in the community include measures to combat illness and promote mental health. We want to encourage our employees to stay active and to recognise and treat illnesses at an early stage.

Corporate fitness

Eye examinations

Vaccination options

Blood donation drives

First aid courses

Fire safety training

Mental coaching

SDG 4: Quality education

Through our programmes, we create a dynamic learning environment that enables our employees to continuously grow and develop.

At our IT training centre, we regularly offer training and further education opportunities for employees. Together with the Bremen Employment Office, we run retraining programmes to train future computer scientists. New employees go through a special training lab that prepares them for the world of work and enables them to develop and improve their skills.
In addition to our training programmes, we have created exchange platforms that promote knowledge sharing within the company and support the personal and professional development of our employees.

We support various programmes for children, such as Tandem Power, Code Week, Future Day and school internships. We supervise bachelor's theses, are involved with Avanja, give lectures on specialist topics, take on teaching assignments and participate in panel discussions.

Code Week

Getting children and young people excited about IT – that's what Code Week, which takes place every year during the autumn holidays, is all about. We organise Code Week together with the Körber Foundation and other companies in Bremen. Our goal is to introduce boys and girls to the digital world in a playful way. To this end, we offer various workshops to get them interested in hacking and programming.

Avanja

Women in IT! We are involved in Avanja, an initiative of the industry association bremen digitalmedia. The aim of the initiative is to get more women working in IT professions. Avanja shows companies how to address the shortage of skilled workers and specifically target women. We fully support this project because mixed teams are more successful and innovative. For example, we took part in the ‘Avanja Recruiting Challenge’ to optimise our recruiting processes and improve our approach to women and female graduates.

Tandem Power

Business meets young talent

A new approach to career guidance: The Tandem Power project aims to motivate young people to pursue careers in IT and counteract the shortage of skilled workers. The idea is that up to 25 school pupils and representatives from a company spend two days getting to know each other. Workshops are held to give an insight into different careers. The project also aims to dispel typical IT clichés. We are part of the project to support the promotion of young talent and counteract the shortage of skilled workers.

SDG 5: Gender equality

We attach great importance to our employees being able to balance their professional, family and private lives. To support this balance, we focus on trust, personal responsibility, flexible working time models, remote working and home office. In addition, it is always possible to make individual arrangements that suit your current life situation. We have been awarded the ‘Ausgezeichnet Familienfreundlich’ (Excellent Family Friendliness) seal of quality by the state of Bremen for our commitment.

SDG 7: Affordable & clean energy

We specifically use energy-efficient technologies in our data centres and offices to optimise our energy consumption and minimise the use of non-renewable energy sources.

In addition, we purchase green electricity from certified sources, thereby actively reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the use of clean energy.

Furthermore, we raise awareness among our employees about the conscious use of energy and promote energy-efficient behaviour within our company.

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth

We create jobs with fair wages and good working conditions. In our company, we offer our employees a great deal of freedom and promote a working culture based on mutual respect and appreciation. We have summarised our most important principles in our ‘team code’.

Our modern workplaces are regularly checked for health and safety. We also offer health-promoting measures such as flu vaccinations to protect the health of our employees.

SDG 10: Reduced inequalities

As a company, we have signed the Diversity Charter and embrace a corporate culture that respects and values diversity and offers equal opportunities to all employees, regardless of gender, origin or background.

To promote diversity, we implement various measures for inclusion and participation. These include our Diversity Day activities, such as the change of perspective. We also take part in the Diversity Challenge of the Diversity Charter and promote women in IT professions through our participation in the Avanja initiative in Bremen. We promote barrier-free workplaces and participation in the ‘Inklupreneur’ project. ‘Inklupreneur’ helps to reduce inequalities by supporting people from different backgrounds and with different abilities to find a successful place in the world of work.

SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities

As a company, we are actively committed to environmentally friendly mobility solutions in order to minimise our negative impact on the environment. To this end, we have already implemented a number of measures:

  • Introduction of bicycle leasing with JobRad and participation in the ‘Cycle to Work’ campaign
  • Use of electric cars in our vehicle fleet and installation of charging stations for electric vehicles at the workplace
  • Promotion of carpooling, support with financing the Deutschlandticket and the use of car-sharing services such as Cambio
  • Promoting remote working or flexible working hours to reduce the need for commuting

SDG 13: Climate action

To reduce our environmental footprint, we employ environmentally friendly procurement practices and focus on sustainable waste disposal.

We consistently separate waste, have switched from plastic bottles to reusable glass bottles, and aim to be a paperless office. By reducing paper consumption and using digital document management systems, we minimise our ecological footprint and contribute to the protection of forests and habitats.

We also reduce our electronic waste by extending the life cycle of our products and giving hardware a second life. By refurbishing and donating used equipment to social institutions or recycling it, we help to reduce waste and conserve resources.

We optimise heating control, implement energy-saving measures and reduce CO2 emissions in our business activities.

SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals

We prefer to work with regional suppliers and partners in order to strengthen the local economy and minimise transport distances.
