Application for calculating zero fuel weight

On behalf of TUI fly, we developed a new application for calculating zero fuel weight (ZFW) – ZFW describes the weight of a fully booked aircraft with empty tanks. In addition, we provided agile coaching for training purposes to the customer's employees involved in the project.

Shortcuts to the project

An important part of developing the new application for TUI fly was designing a user-friendly UI for recording and visualizing data records. It was particularly important that users were not hindered in their workflow. The project team consisted of three project participants – a product owner, experts from TUI fly's IT department, and our own software developers. We also provided the Scrum Master for agile coaching. Both the coaching and the development of the application were carried out by the team in close coordination at two locations. The goal of the agile coaching was to train the product owner at TUI fly in writing user stories and applying the “story slicing” method. In addition, we trained the team in managing the product backlog, recording and processing feedback on backlog items, applying the INVEST criteria, and using story points.

  1. Weight recording

Weight recording involves collecting all relevant weight data for calculating the zero fuel weight (ZFW) of a flight. This includes the weight of the aircraft itself, as well as the codes and weights for in-flight catering, crew, and passengers during a specific period.

  2. Recording of routes

The subfleet level offers the option of defining route information, including catering codes, crew/passenger codes, and specific routes (departure-destination). This information is later integrated into the ZFW calculation.

  3. Recording of exceptions

It is possible to define special deviations, such as different routes, catering codes, or crew-passenger codes, which should only be taken into account in the ZFW calculation under certain conditions.

  4. Simulation

Finally, a simulation of a ZFW calculation can be performed for a specific date using all previously recorded weight data, routes, and exceptions. This simulation can be started for individual aircraft or multiple aircraft.
