Development of a referral program for BARMER

In mid-2024, the BARMER health insurance company introduced a flexible customer referral program developed by us. Customers and non-customers can receive non-cash rewards for referrals or use the cash-out option. The program impresses with its transparency, flexibility, and high performance.

Shortcuts to the project

For BARMER health insurance, referrals are a key sales channel. However, the previous solutions were inadequate: rewards were limited to cash bonuses and a few vouchers, while the referral website was inflexible and did not fully reflect BARMER's corporate identity (CI). In addition, there was a lack of transparency and control over data, and the performance of the old system left much to be desired. Our task was therefore to develop and successfully implement a customized, modern customer referral program (CRP).

Key new features of the program

The new program includes numerous improvements and innovations:

Incentives for every referral

with 25.00 euros (equivalent to 2,500 points)

Individual rewards shop

with a selection of non-cash prizes and a cashout option

Automated cashout function

via finAPI, including IBAN validity check

APIs

to confirm recommendations and provide feedback on all transactions to BARMER

Comprehensive reporting

and manual administration functions for individual adjustments

Manual input options

for handwritten recommendation forms

Important aspect

An important aspect of the project was compliance with the strict legal requirements to which BARMER is subject as a health insurance company. In addition, a secure, automated cash payment process was developed that enables simple and secure payments via finAPI. An interface for BARMER employees allows them to independently generate referral codes and create participant accounts.
