For an industrial company in the automotive sector, we developed an image-based AI parts search that significantly simplifies the process of finding replacement parts. In the B2B replacement parts business in particular, identifying the right components is often time-consuming. Part numbers or unique product names are frequently missing, and the search process relies on the experience and knowledge of individual employees. The goal of the project was to make the spare parts search more intuitive, faster, and more reliable. Instead of searching by part numbers or product names, all it takes now is a photo of the existing component to find matching catalog items.
How We Developed an Intelligent Visual Search
At the heart of the solution is an AI-powered image search that analyzes product images using a Vision Transformer and converts them into high-dimensional vectors (embeddings).
When employees take a photo of an existing component, the AI processes the image and compares it in real time with thousands of catalog items. The components that are most visually similar are then returned as search results.
To ensure that search quality remains high even under real-world conditions, we also developed intelligent image preprocessing and a verification scoring system. This system evaluates the quality of the search results and helps users select the most likely replacement parts.
