Implementing a Secure Atlassian Cloud Migration

An Atlassian Cloud migration modernizes Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management and creates a secure, future-proof platform for your teams. We guide you through a structured process, from assessing your existing environments to implementing a robust Atlassian Cloud solution.

Why Companies Are Switching to the Atlassian Cloud

An Atlassian Cloud migration is more than just a response to the Data Center end-of-life. Many companies are moving to the cloud to make Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management more modern, secure, and easier to manage.

Modernization and Improved Maintainability

Complex Atlassian environments, custom extensions, and intricate operational models often hinder further development. Migrating to the Atlassian Cloud simplifies structures, reduces operational overhead, and ensures platforms are future-ready.

Governance and Standardization

Projects, spaces, roles, and permissions that have evolved over the years make transparency and management difficult. A cloud migration offers the opportunity to consolidate Atlassian structures and establish clear governance.

Scalability and Further Development

Companies need an Atlassian platform that can scale to meet new requirements. Cloud migration provides a solid roadmap for this and facilitates the long-term evolution of Jira, Confluence, and JSM.

Data Center End of Life as a Catalyst

The end of life for Atlassian Data Center is increasing the pressure on many companies to take action. Fixed deadlines and expiring operating models make early, structured migration planning particularly important.

Atlassian Data Center End of Life – Key Dates

March 30, 2026

No new data center subscriptions for new customers.

What this means: Companies should clarify their strategic goals now, at the very latest, and assess whether their existing data center setups will remain viable in the long term.

March 30, 2028

Deadline for new subscriptions, apps, and extensions for existing customers.

What this means: App strategy, licensing requirements, and extensions must be planned in advance, as the ability to make changes later will be significantly limited.

March 28, 2029

End of Life for affected products and associated apps; subscriptions will expire.

What this means: Affected data center products and apps will become read-only once their subscriptions expire and will no longer be suitable as active working platforms.

What Companies Should Clarify Now

The most important question isn't just whether your Atlassian products are affected. What really matters is how deeply Jira, Confluence, apps, and integrations are embedded in your daily processes—and what risks arise if migration, licensing, or app transition are planned too late.

Important Questions

  • Which Jira, Confluence, or service management instances are affected?
  • Which Marketplace apps are business-critical?
  • Which integrations are essential for processes or reporting?
  • Which data, projects, and spaces need to be migrated or cleaned up?
  • What compliance, data protection, or governance requirements apply?
  • Which teams need to be involved early on?

Affected Products

  • Jira Software Data Center
  • Jira Service Management Data Center
  • Confluence Data Center
  • Bamboo Data Center
  • Crowd Data Center
  • Marketplace apps for affected Data Center products

Not affected or affected separately

  • Bitbucket Data Center – separate special path
  • Jira Align Data Center – not part of this EOL
  • Exception and transition scenarios to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis

What “Cloud Readiness” Actually Means

A successful Atlassian Cloud migration doesn't start with the technical move itself. The key factor is whether your existing Jira, Confluence, and JSM environment is ready for the cloud from a business, technical, and organizational standpoint.

Data and Structures

We assess which projects, spaces, workflows, and content should actually be migrated, and where cleanup, consolidation, or reorganization would be beneficial.

Apps and Integrations

Existing apps and interfaces must be evaluated early on. This involves assessing cloud readiness, alternatives, dependencies, costs, and the impact on existing processes.

Roles and Permissions

Existing authorization models can rarely be adopted as-is. Migration offers the opportunity to neatly restructure access, roles, and responsibilities.

Target Architecture and Governance

The Atlassian Cloud must not only function properly, but also remain maintainable and manageable over the long term. This requires clear product structures, responsibilities, and governance.

Ability to Work After the Change

A migration is only successful if teams can continue to work seamlessly after the go-live. That is why communication, enablement, and adoption are part of the planning from the very beginning.

From an Assessment to a Viable Target Platform

  1. 1

    Assess Inventory and Risks

We provide transparency regarding products, instances, apps, integrations, data, and potential migration risks.

  2. 2

Evaluate the Target Scenario and Options

We evaluate suitable target architectures, cloud options, and operating models for your Atlassian environment.

  3. 3

    Check Apps, Data, and Integrations

We assess extensions, interfaces, permissions, and data structures to determine their readiness for migration.

  4. 4

    Prepare for a Test Migration

We validate the planned approach early on to reduce risks before the actual go-live.

  5. 5

Ensuring a Successful Rollout and Governance

We support go-live, enablement, and governance to ensure that teams remain productive and the platform remains usable over the long term.

If your Atlassian environment isn't ready for migration yet

Clean up legacy data

Existing projects, spaces, fields, workflows, and content do not need to be fully migrated to the Atlassian Cloud. Often, the greatest value comes from deliberate streamlining and clear structures.

Review the app portfolio

Risks often arise from apps, extensions, and custom integrations. That’s why we assess early on which applications are cloud-ready, need to be replaced, or create new dependencies.

Define pilot areas

For complex Jira, Confluence, or JSM environments, a phased approach makes sense. Clearly defined pilot areas help ensure a controlled start to the migration and allow you to leverage your experience in a targeted manner.

Prioritize Governance

Permissions, roles, responsibilities, and business logic should be clarified before the migration. This will help you minimize friction in the target system and create a sustainable cloud architecture.

WHY TEAM NEUSTA

An Atlassian Cloud migration affects not only IT systems, but also processes, collaboration, knowledge, governance, and adoption. We combine Atlassian expertise with experience in consulting, technology, integration, and organizational development.

Atlassian Expertise

We have hands-on experience with Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Marketplace apps, and common migration risks.

Technical and Organizational Perspective

We consider not only data and systems, but also roles, permissions, work processes, and governance.

Structured Migration Path

From the assessment through the roadmap and test migration to the go-live, we provide clarity on the effort involved, the risks, and the next steps.

Focus on Work Ability

A migration is only successful if teams can continue to work reliably after the transition.

A Look at the Target Company

We don't view the migration as ending at go-live, but rather as continuing until we have a stable cloud platform that is capable of further development.

After the go-live, actual use begins

The Atlassian Cloud Migration isn’t complete once the technical transition is finished. It’s only in day-to-day use that we’ll see whether Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management are running smoothly, permissions are set correctly, and teams can continue working securely.

We’ll continue to support you even after go-live with stabilization, support, further development, and governance. This ensures that the migration results in an Atlassian Cloud platform that will stand the test of time.
